There are many, many spectacular sights in New Zealand – mountains, lakes, fiords, the coast and so on.  But, as you approach Mt. Cook/Aoraki from the south, traveling along Lake Pukaki, you have a lot of time to soak it in and see how it rises head and shoulders above the surrounding mountains.  It’s no wonder that Sir Edmund Hillary used Aoraki and its neighbors for his training before his Mt.
